Actions are probably one of the less used options in Photoshop. But, it can be very handy for people that constantly do the same procedure in most of their works. Some of you may be wondering, what is this thing that I'm blabbering about? Well, Actions are ways to 'record' certain 'actions' that you do in Photoshop. For example, adding a Gradient Map to your image, or Sharpening your image. You can record all these by using Actions, and then every time you need to do one of these 'actions' again, all you have to do is click a shortcut.
Okay, let's try making one of these Actions. First, open a new document; size doesn't matter (I chose 300x300px). On your right side of your workspace, there should be a small window with two tabs, 'History' and 'Actions'. If it's not there, go to Window > Actions, or just click Alt+F9.
We're going to make a simple action, it adds a 5px border around a canvas. Click the 'Create new action' icon next to the garbage bin icon (Delete). Fill in the name box '5px Border'. From the 'Function Key' drop-down you can choose a shortcut for this Action. I chose F3+Shift+Ctrl. Press OK. Now everything you do in Photoshop will be recorded and will be stored in your new Action.
Create a new layer. Click Ctrl+A, this will select the whole canvas. Go to Edit > Stroke. A new window should pop-up, here you'll apply the settings for the border. Enter '5px' in the 'Width box. Choose 'Inside' in the Location section, choose a color and press OK. Click Ctrl+D. Now press the square button in the Actions window, this will stop the recording. Your new Action has been saved and can now be used by simply using your shortcut. Now to see if it works! Create a new document, my canvas will be 500x500px large. Ok, click your shortcut keys and it should work, a 5px border has been added around your canvas!

If you don't want to make your own Actions, then you can always find some on the internet. deviantART is a good place to find high quality ones.
